French is the official language.
Although non-French speaking visitors may be wary of attempting French words and phrases, Parisians appreciate any effort to speak at least some French.
Business Hours
Department stores generally open from 9:30 am to 7:00 pm Monday to Saturday. Department stores like Le Printemps and Les Galeries Lafayette are open until 10:00 pm on Thursday and shops are open until midnight on the Avenue des Champs-Elysées. Small shops generally open earlier at 8:00 am and close later at 8:00 pm; however, they may take a long lunch break and close between 12:00 noon and 2:00 pm or 3:00 pm. Some Paris stores open on Sunday, but not all.
Banking hours vary depending on the bank, but generally opening hours are from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, and from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm Monday to Friday. Certain banks may remain closed on Monday, and most close at 12:00 noon on the day immediately preceding a bank holiday, and for all or part of the day immediately after a bank holiday.
Museums are generally open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, six days a week, and closed on Monday or Tuesday.

The commercial, economic and intellectual centre of France, Paris is at the forefront of modern European development both politically and culturally, and offers the visitor an infinite variety of things to see and do.
Often referred to as the 'City of Light', Paris lies on the banks of the river Seine. North of the river are some of the city's most famous landmarks that include the Champs Élysées running west to l'Arc de Triomphe.
At the other end of the Champs Élysées is la Place de la Concorde, a beautiful square.
A little further east is the world-famous Louvre and the Centre Georges Pompidou. South of Centre Pompidou is Notre-Dame de Paris on l'Île de la Cité, while on the left bank (Rive Gauche) is the Eiffel Tower. Also on this side of the river is the musée d'Orsay, famous for its Impressionist collection.
